Four vs. Five Bands
Two different coding-schemes exist; one with 4 bands, and one with 5 bands. Although the meaning of the colours is the same in each of these schemes, the meaning of the bands is slightly different in each.In general, the first two or three bands encode a two- or three-digit number, and the following bands encode a multiplier (i.e. how many zeroes) and a tolerance value.
The encoding with four coloured bands:
band
- 1st digit of value
- 2nd digit of value
- multiplier
- tolerance
The encoding with five coloured bands:
band
- 1st digit of value
- 2nd digit of value
- 3rd digit of value
- multiplier
- tolerance
